MOISES BARRIOS / STRANGE FRUIT, BITTER FRUIT: THE CONSEQUENCES OF ABUNDANCE (2016)

Artist: Moisés Barrios

Curator: Gabriel Rodríguez

Moisés Barrios has been an artist in residence at Concepcion 41 since January 2016 and has created a site-specific project that deals with themes surrounding the United Fruit Company and its intervention in Guatemala. The pieces in the exhibition are developed in three series: the first is a series of drawings which includes drafts and sketches made in relation to the site-specific installation produced at C41; the second is a series of objects painted as banana skins, a technique the artist has been developing for years.  Objects range from a chair – alluding to the work of Joseph Kosuth – to a pickaxe on a table – relating to mining, and how the banana has been exploited as gold in the tropics. These objects will be scattered throughout the exterior space of C41. Finally, there will be an installation made in the trees, where bunches of bananas will be hung, and the public will be invited to grab and consume.
